In Service and Prayer with the Trees

The Trees are speaking… we just need to listen and know how to listen. Trees are the connectors to the cosmos and the Earth, to all the elements. Science has confirmed the wisdom of ancient and indigenous cultures… trees have a heartbeat, an intricate communication system that extends up to 50 miles, they take care for and support one another, and provide so much to the inhabitants of the Forests.

Trees are constantly in service to all of us on this planet… constantly recycling the air we breathe, providing food, shade, shelter, medicine…

In Shel Silverstein’s book, “The Giving Tree,” the tree was constantly giving, of service to this boy/man she loved unconditionally… much like the Earth Mother. All The Giving Tree wanted in return was relationship, to be appreciated. Like all living things, Trees are here for a purpose, deeper than what Science can explain. When a Yew Tree’s purpose isn’t fulfilled, they will hollow themselves out and extend their energy into creating new shoots, a new trunk… the ultimate re-birth.

My experience with Trees, just like people, is they want to be seen, respected, needed, and loved. When we hug a tree, it is not just for our benefit… Trees need hugs too. Trees have been used in Ceremony for centuries and much of this has been lost. In the UK, the ancient Trees were cut down as cultural and spiritual warfare against the people and land. In the name of religion and/or the monarchy, Trees were often cut down to punish, control, and ultimately commit cultural genocide. Today, Trees are in constant threat of destruction due to development and capitalistic endeavors, yet there are many efforts in preserving and restoring these old-growth Trees and Forests.

Planting trees, especially native hardwoods, has been identified as the most efficient and effective action to the current climate crisis, while also reducing and eliminating dependence on fossil fuels. Many communities and countries have dedicated efforts to doing this. The impact of the climate crisis and exploitation of the natural world has global humanitarian impacts. The disregard for the natural world is also met with consequences to the communities and people living in these areas, forcing migration and the current refugee crises.

Working with one of the Ancient Yews in Scotland, I was shown how to work with the Yew, as well as other Ancient Trees, connecting our energy bodies, allowing for the flow from Pachamama and Spirit, and using the beautifully intricate root system and symbiotic relationship with fungi to disseminate prayers to the natural and human world. Having practiced this with other Trees, I feel so honored, humbled, and grateful for the deep connection. We cannot change the current climate crises without the support from our plant and animal Brothers and Sisters. Being called to Action to share this wisdom and ask for others to Pray collectively with the roots of the Trees throughout the globe, as well as planting new Trees, to support the restoration of our planet and to bring the collective into balance and relationship with all the Earth’s creatures—human and the more than human.
